Technology giants' power to be probed in US - BBC News

The US Justice Department has announced an investigation into leading online platforms, examining whether they are unfairly restricting competition.

The DoJ did not name any firms, but companies such as Facebook, Google, Amazon and Apple are likely to be scrutinised in the wide-ranging probe.

It was sparked by "widespread concerns" about "search, social media, and some retail services online," the DoJ said.

It marks the latest scrutiny of tech firms' power over the US economy.

The DoJ has sweeping powers to investigate firms it suspects of breaching competition laws, and it can even break up companies that it thinks are too dominant.

The US Federal Trade Commission is already looking into similar concerns, while there are also investigations taking place in the European Union.

Last month, the Justice Department was reported to be preparing an investigation of Google to determine whether the search engine giant had broken anti-trust law.

The US Department of Justice said its anti-trust review would consider "whether and how market-leading online platforms have achieved market power and are engaging in practices that have reduced competition, stifled innovation or otherwise harmed consumers".

It is likely to examine issues including how the largest tech firms have grown in size and power, and expanded into additional businesses, as well as how they have used the powers that come with having very large networks of users.

"Without the discipline of meaningful market-based competition, digital platforms may act in ways that are not responsive to consumer demands," Assistant Attorney General Makan Delrahim, who heads the Anti-trust Division, said in a statement.

"The department's anti-trust review will explore these important issues."

The Department of Justice hasn't said specifically which companies are under investigation, but it can be safely assumed Apple, Amazon, Facebook and Google will be the focus of their attention.

The broad question is whether newcomers are truly able to compete against the scale and riches of the Silicon Valley giants. What will make these firms nervous is that the DoJ isn't looking at any specific allegation, but instead embarking on a look at how the companies came to power, and what they've done to remain there.

This latest investigation is in addition to an ongoing probe by the US Federal Trade Commission into similar concerns, as well as investigations taking place in the European Union.

The tech companies insist they have viable competition, and warn that breaking up big American firms might pave the way for foreign competitors, particularly out of China.

Google and Facebook now dominate online advertising as consumers use their smartphones to order food, watch films and socialise online.

Meanwhile the growing popularity of online shopping has boosted the fortunes of firms such as Amazon.

Daniel Ives, an analyst at research firm Wedbush Securities, said the DoJ investigation was a "major shot across the bows" of big tech companies.

However, he said the end result was likely to result in "business model tweaks" or in a worst-case scenario potential fines rather than forced break-ups of the underlying businesses.

Technology companies are facing a growing global backlash, driven by concerns that they have too much power and are harming users and business rivals.

Google and Apple declined to comment, while Facebook and Amazon did not immediately comment.

Coca-Cola will sell an alcoholic drink nationwide in Japan after a successful test run - CNN

The company will officially launch the Lemon-do alcoholic soft drink in Japan in October, Coca-Cola spokesperson Scott Leith told CNN on Tuesday.
The lemon-flavored drink debuted in May 2018 in Kyushu, Japan's southernmost island, in three varieties ranging from 3% to 7% alcohol, Leith said.
It's modeled after Japanese "chu-hi," a popular canned drink made with a distilled alcohol called shochu, carbonated water and flavoring, Coca-Cola Japan business unit president Jorge Garduño said in February 2018.
Lemon-do is the company's first stab at hard seltzer, and it may be the only product of its kind for some time. Garduño said since the drink was created for a "specific slice" of Coca-Cola's market, it'll likely stay a Japanese exclusive.
"I don't think people around the world should expect to see this kind of thing from Coca-Cola," he said.
"I think the culture here is still very unique and special, so many products that are born here will stay here."
The company has higher hopes for the mass appeal of its new coffee product. Coca-Cola With Coffee, a riff on 2006's unsuccessful Coca-Cola Blak, will launch in 25 international markets by the end of 2019, the company told CNN in May.
Unlike the Japanese spiked seltzer, the coffee concoction actually contains Coke and a hefty dose of caffeine. It's not guaranteed, but Javier Meza, the company's global chief marketing officer of sparkling beverages, said that it could see a US debut as soon as 2020.

Ford targets Tesla with its new electric-truck claim - CNBC

Ford on Tuesday released a video of an all-electric F-150 prototype truck towing 1.25 million pounds of double-decker rail cars carrying 42 Ford pickups.

Source: Ford

DETROIT — Ford is going on the offensive to defend its highly-profitable pickup franchise from emerging all-electric truck competitors such as Tesla.

A month after Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Tesla's planned electric pickup would "be a better truck than an F-150 in terms of truck-like capability" during a podcast, Ford on Tuesday released a video of an all-electric F-150 pickup prototype truck towing 1.25 million pounds of double-decker rail cars carrying 42 F-150 pickups.

The towing weight shown in the video is roughly four times more than the 300,000 pounds Musk tweeted Tesla's pickup would be capable of towing last year. However, Ford was quick to disclose that the video is a demonstration of capability and "far beyond any production truck's published capacity."

"This demonstration showcases our commitment to remain the clear leader in trucks as well as to highlight our commitment to the future of electric vehicles," Ted Cannis, Ford global director of electrification, wrote in a post on Medium accompanying the video.

Releasing such a video is an uncommon practice for Ford, which traditionally wouldn't publicize much, if anything, about a vehicle that remains years away from production. It shows the importance Ford has on retaining its sales leadership with F-Series, even for all-electric trucks, according to Michelle Krebs, senior analyst with Cox Automotive.

"F-Series is everything to Ford. It is the cash cow of Ford," Krebs said. "The company would be a niche automaker if it didn't have F-Series."

Ford's overall business heavily depends on its F-Series truck, which has been the America's best-selling truck for 42 years and the country's best-selling vehicle for 37 years. Ford sold more than 1 million F-Series trucks globally in 2018, averaging a sale every 29.3 seconds.

"We are dead serious about delivering an electric pickup truck that again sets an all-new bar for what light duty trucks can deliver — not in the science project sense, but in the reality of what tough trucks need to do," Cannis wrote.

While all-electric vehicles remain a niche market and no major automaker has released an all-electric pickup, buzz around EV pickups has increased as non-traditional automakers such as Tesla and Amazon-backed Rivian prepare to enter the segment.

"This whole electric-vehicle pickup truck discussion has become a game of one-upmanship," Krebs said. "Ford is not going to let Tesla stand unchallenged."

General Motors CEO Mary Barra earlier this year confirmed the Detroit automaker also is in development of an all-electric pickup, however that vehicle is still expected to be years away as well.

The all-electric F-150 prototype used in Ford's video is separate from an upcoming all-electric pickup Ford announced in April as part of a $500 million investment in Plymouth, Michigan-based Rivian.

Compared to pickups with traditional internal combustion engines that use gasoline and diesel, all-electric trucks are expected to offer higher instantaneous torque for towing and hauling as well as other worksite applications for fleet and work truck buyers. Not to mention, zero emissions.

Find your new home on Amazon.com and you could get a $5,000 credit - Business Insider

AmazonAmazon's new real estate collaboration.Amazon
  • Amazon has partnered with Realogy, the US' largest residential real-estate brokerage company, to launch a new service that connects potential homebuyers to real-estate brokers.
  • Customers enter their details on Amazon.com and are then connected with Realogy brokers in the area where they are looking for a property.
  • If these customers purchase a home through this new service, known as TurnKey, they are given up to $5,000 to spend on Amazon Home Services and its smart-home devices.
  • It's good for Amazon, as it means it can get its smart-home devices into the hands of more customers and spread the word about the home services that it offers.
  • Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories.

Amazon shoppers can now start the search for their next home on Amazon.com.

This is because the tech giant has partnered up with Realogy, the US' largest residential real-estate brokerage company, to create a new service whereby it links customers to real-estate brokers. Those that use the service and go on to buy a property are then rewarded with a credit to spend at Amazon.

Customers sign up for the new service, TurnKey, on Amazon.com. They are asked to provide their details and the area where they are looking for a property and then are subsequently introduced to a real-estate broker in that area. Amazon simply provides the platform for the customer to start the search.

If this customer decides to purchase the house through the TurnKey system, Amazon steps in again, rewarding the customer with up to $5,000 to spend on a selection of Amazon Home Services – deep cleaning or a handyman, for example – as well as smart-home products such as its Alexa devices. The size of this credit depends on the cost of the house – to get $5,000, you'd need to buy a house that costs more than $700,000.

The Amazon credit is covered by Realogy, which clearly sees value in having access to a large pool of Amazon customers that might be looking for a new house.

But Amazon also benefits, as it helps bring its smart-home devices into the hands of more customers and spread the word about the home services it offers.

"Customers can be overwhelmed when moving, and we're excited to be working with Realogy to offer homebuyers a simplified way to settle into a new home," Pat Bigatel, director of Amazon Home Services, said in a statement to the press.

"The Amazon Move-In Benefit will enable homebuyers to adapt the offering to their needs – from help assembling furniture, to assisting with smart home device set up, to a deep clean, and more."

U.S. home sales tumble as prices race to record high - Reuters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S home sales fell more than expected in June as a persistent shortage of properties pushed prices to a record high, suggesting the housing market was struggling to regain speed since hitting a soft patch last year.

Weak housing and manufacturing are holding back the economy, offsetting strong consumer spending. The National Association of Realtors said on Tuesday existing home sales dropped 1.7% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.27 million units last month. May’s sales pace was revised higher to 5.36 million units from the previously reported 5.34 million units.

“Meager inventory levels, especially in the entry-level segment, and still-rising prices continue to limit the selection of homes available to more budget-conscious buyers,” said Matthew Speakman, an economist at Zillow.

Economists polled by Reuters had forecast existing home sales slipping 0.2% to a rate of 5.33 million units in June. Existing home sales, which make up about 90 percent of U.S. home sales, decreased 2.2% from a year ago. That was the 16th straight year-on-year decline in home sales.

The weakness in housing comes despite cheaper mortgage rates and the lowest unemployment rate in nearly 50 years.

Supply has continued to lag, especially in the lower-price segment of the housing market because of land and labor shortages, as well as expensive building materials. The government reported last week that permits for future home construction dropped to a two-year low in June.

According to the NAR, there was a 19% drop from a year earlier in sales of houses priced $100,000 and below.

The Realtors group said there was strong demand in this market segment, but not enough homes for sale. The NAR also said last year’s revamp of the U.S. tax code, which reduced the amount of mortgage interest payments homeowners could deduct, was weighing on demand for homes priced at $1 million and above.

The 30-year fixed mortgage rate has dropped to an average of 3.81% from a more than seven-year peak of 4.94% in November, according to data from mortgage finance agency Freddie Mac. Further declines are likely as the Federal Reserve is expected to cut interest rates next week for the first time in a decade.

Last month, existing home sales rose in the Northeast and Midwest. They tumbled in the populous South and in the West.

June’s drop in existing homes sales likely means less brokers’ commissions, which suggests that housing probably remained a drag on gross domestic product in the second quarter. Spending on homebuilding contracted in the first quarter, the fifth straight quarterly decline.

The Atlanta Fed is forecasting GDP rising at a 1.6% annualized rate in the second quarter. The economy grew at a 3.1% rate in the January-March period. The government will publish it snapshot of second-quarter GDP on Friday.

The PHLX housing index .HGX was little changed, underperforming a broadly firmer U.S. stock market. The dollar held near a five-week high against a basket of currencies. U.S. Treasury prices fell.

HOUSE PRICES RE-ACCELERATE

There were 1.93 million previously owned homes on the market in June, up from 1.91 million in May and unchanged from a year ago. The median existing house price increased 4.3% from a year ago to $285,700 in June, an all-time high. House price inflation had been slowing after a jump in mortgage rates last year dampened demand.

Last month, houses for sale typically stayed on the market for 27 days, up from 26 days in May and a year ago. Fifty-six percent of homes sold in June were on the market for less than a month.

At June’s sales pace, it would take 4.4 months to exhaust the current inventory, up from 4.3 months in May. A six-to-seven-month supply is viewed as a healthy balance between supply and demand.

First-time buyers accounted for 35% of sales last month, up from 32% in May and 31% a year ago. Economists and realtors say a 40% share of first-time buyers is needed for a robust housing market.

Orange Vanilla and New Coke are giving Coca-Cola a boost - CNN

The beverage company said on Tuesday that net revenues grew 6% to $10 billion in the second quarter, attributing the growth in part to innovations within the classic Coke brand. Sparkling soft drinks grew 3% for the quarter, the company said, driven by 4% growth in Coke.
Shares of the company rose nearly 3% on the results.
Although Coca-Cola (KO) strives to be a "total beverage company" by acquiring juice and seltzer brands and coming up with new products within those categories, it also needs to make sure that people don't abandon it's most recognizable product.
To do that, it has launched new flavors, like Orange Vanilla Coke, as well as new platforms, like Coca-Cola with Coffee and a Coca-Cola energy drink (those two are available only internationally, for now).
Innovations like Orange Vanilla Coke helped the company this quarter.
Coca-Cola said its energy drink, which is sold in 14 countries, is showing early signs of success. By the end of the year, Coca-Cola plans to make it available in 20 markets.
In addition to the new lines, stunts also raise interest in the signature product. When Disney opened it's new "Star Wars" theme park, it sold custom bottles of Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite and Dasani that looked like Droids. And the company brought back New Coke for a limited time as a promotion for Netflix's "Stranger Things."
Low-sugar Coke products are also performing well. Coke Zero Sugar, a consistent sales driver, grew double-digits by volume for the seventh quarter. The company also unveiled a sleek new look and trendy flavors within Diet Coke in 2018.
Coca-Cola is also making progress with its line of ready-to-drink coffees. The beverage company completed its acquisition of the UK coffee chain Costa earlier this year, and has since launched a canned coffee line under the Costa brand in Great Britain.
